Canon EOS R5 Mark II will Stick with 45MP Sensor, But with New AI Features

Canon Rumors reports that the upcoming Canon EOS R5 Mark II will likely retain the same 45MP sensor resolution as its predecessor, according to multiple insider tips. While some may have expected or hoped for a bump to 60MP, the site suggests sticking with 45MP won’t significantly impact sales or appeal.

Instead, the EOS R5 Mark II is rumored to introduce never-before-seen artificial intelligence autofocus capabilities. Both this camera and the flagship EOS R1 model coming later in 2024 could integrate AI for more intelligent tracking and focus. One possibility is the ability to recognize and track a specific person’s face, even in crowded scenes with many distractions.

Canon EOS R1 & EOS R5 Mark II Release Date in Q3 or Q4 of 2024

Canon’s hotly anticipated camera launches, the EOS R5 Mark II and EOS R1, are scheduled to be announced in late April or early May. However, the cameras won’t be available for purchase by consumers until after two major sporting events this summer.

The plan is to “announce” the new models in the coming weeks, and then provide them to photographers covering the Euro 2024 football championship in June and the Summer Olympic Games in July. This follows the strategy Canon used with the EOS R3, first putting it in the hands of working pros at big events to generate buzz.

Canon EOS R1 will Coming Before EOS R5 Mark II

According to the latest rumors, 2024 will bring new prosumer and professional models, including the long-awaited EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II. The EOS R1 will arrive “well before” any EOS R5 Mark II, tempering hopes for a CP+ announcement in February. More likely, Canon will unveil the R1 like it did with the R3: first a development announcement with some initial details, followed by the official launch later.

Intriguingly, hints suggest the R1 may have “less resolution than many think” – perhaps meaning under 45MP to forego 8K video. This may disappoint some, but 8K adoption remains limited for now. The R5 line will likely retain 8K capabilities, better suiting that form factor once rigged up.

EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II will not Feature Global Shutter

Rumors have been swirling about whether Canon will add global shutters to its upcoming EOS R5 Mark II and flagship EOS R1 mirrorless cameras after Sony unveiled the feature in its new a9 III. However, a highly reliable source has told us that Canon will not be going the global shutter route, at least not yet.

Canon previously showed off a couple of 19MP full-frame global shutter sensors last year, but they were intended for industrial applications, not consumer gear. While Canon did have a global shutter in its now discontinued C700 GS cinema camera, our source says neither the R5 II nor R1 will have the feature.
