According to CR, they have just confirmed that the long awaited Canon EOS R5 Mark II will be finally announced in April 2024. And during the same time, Canon will also announce the development of the flagship EOS R1.
In the RF lens lineup, Canon will likely announce both an RF 28mm f/1.4 or f/1.8 lens (it’s unclear whether it will have Canon’s premium “L” designation) and the RF 35mm f/1.2L USM around the same time, potentially alongside the launch of the EOS R5 Mark II camera.
Canon is reportedly working on a sequel to their impressive but heavy RF 28-70mm f/2L USM zoom lens, according to recent rumors from CR. The original “look what we can do” lens stunned photographers with its ultra-wide f/2 constant aperture across a standard zoom range. However, the image quality came at the cost of significant weight.
Sources claim the Mark II version of the RF 28-70mm f/2L will deliver even better optical performance in a body that is notably lighter. Reduced weight would be a welcome improvement for many photographers interested in this lens. Exact details on how Canon plans to shed weight while maintaining image quality are unknown at this time.
Recently, Canon has registered two new cameras codes in China. These two camera codes are: DS126922 and ID0179. According to rumors, the DS126922 is probably the upcoming flagship EOS R1, and the ID0179 is a video related camera. The EOS R1 is expected to be announced in next few weeks.

According to the latest rumors, 2024 will bring new prosumer and professional models, including the long-awaited EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II. The EOS R1 will arrive “well before” any EOS R5 Mark II, tempering hopes for a CP+ announcement in February. More likely, Canon will unveil the R1 like it did with the R3: first a development announcement with some initial details, followed by the official launch later.
Intriguingly, hints suggest the R1 may have “less resolution than many think” – perhaps meaning under 45MP to forego 8K video. This may disappoint some, but 8K adoption remains limited for now. The R5 line will likely retain 8K capabilities, better suiting that form factor once rigged up.

Canon is developing an RF 200-500mm f/4L IS USM lens that will fill out its lineup of high-end “big white” telephoto zoom lenses. This lens has been discussed over the course of 2023 but has now reportedly been delayed until the second half of 2024 due to supply constraints on Canon’s recently released RF 100-300mm f/2.8L IS USM lens.
Both Canon and consumers prefer shorter waiting times, so production capacity is currently focused on meeting demand for the popular 100-300mm lens rather than launching the 200-500mm. This extended timeline would allow the new telephoto zoom to debut at major sports events in mid-to-late 2024 like Euro 2024 soccer in June/July or the Summer Olympics in July/August.
